LEVI

I’m yanked from the edge of some dream I can’t quite remember by a scream that slices through the still air like a shard of ice. My eyes snap open, heart kickstarting into a gallop. It takes half a second of disorientation before I register her presence beside me - Bee, her frame rigid with panic.

"Bee?" My voice is gravelly with sleep, but the concern is clear, sharp.

She's gasping, eyes wide as saucers as they flick around the room, trying to ground herself back in reality. Then, her gaze locks on the digital display of the clock on my bedside table. "Oh, my God. Christian is gonna throw me out. He's gonna want to know where I've been all night. He'll think I'm not getting my life together, but just spending all my time partying like he thinks I did in New York." Her voice is a whirlwind of worry, a stark contrast to the husky laughter and soft moans that filled the room hours earlier.

"Hey, hey, come here." I reach out, pulling her trembling frame into me. The feel of her skin against mine, warm and soft, stirs something low in my belly, but concern overrides desire. "It's fine, sweet girl. You can stay here for the night. Honestly, I’d prefer you did."

She shakes her head, a messy tumble of hair brushing against my chest. "That's sweet of you, Levi, but I really need to get home. It's crazy of you to think I can stay here all night without Chris filing a missing persons report or something on me in the morning." Desperation laces her tone, even as she leans into my embrace.

"You do make me crazy," I reply, a sly grin tugging at the corners of my mouth despite the situation. "It's late, and I'm not letting you go out there by yourself."

Her eyebrows knit together in a mix of frustration and something that looks suspiciously like amusement. "Are you completely out of your mind? What if he sees you pulling up at this hour, and then I have to answer to him about why I'm hanging out with his former best friend?" The playful challenge in her voice ignites that familiar spark between us, stirring the air with electric tension.

I chuckle, the sound warm in the cool darkness of the room. "Let him ask. I'll just tell him I was giving his sister a driving lesson." I wink, hoping to lighten the mood, to see that spark in her green eyes that tells me she's in this moment with me.

"A driving lesson?" She giggles despite herself, the sound like music in the quiet. "At what? Two in the morning?"

"I'm a very dedicated instructor. Besides, I thought you should know how to handle a stick." The innuendo hangs between us, thick and undeniable. Her laughter lights up the room, and for a moment, the worry lines around her eyes smooth away.

"Okay, okay," she concedes, though her reluctance is still clear as day. "But you have to drop me off at the end of the street.
